Key takeaways

  • Thyssen's Monday collection access and Saturday temporary-exhibition access are different offers.
  • Reina Sofía requires a ticket during free hours; online reservation is available.
  • Choose one museum per visit rather than racing closing times.

Make This a Habit, Not an Endurance Event

The three Paseo del Arte museums use different free-entry windows. Choose a collection or exhibition first, then the time that fits. Hours were checked on 18 October 2026; use the visitor pages for holiday exceptions and exhibition-specific conditions.

The Schedule to Save

  • Prado: Monday–Saturday 18:00–20:00; Sundays and public holidays 17:00–19:00. Check the museum's ticket channel for admission and exhibition conditions.
  • Reina Sofía: Monday and Wednesday–Saturday 19:00–21:00; Sunday 12:30–14:30. Individual visitors; ticket still required; closed Tuesday.
  • Thyssen: Monday 12:00–16:00. Collection access.
  • Thyssen: Saturday 21:00–23:00. Temporary exhibitions on the ground and minus-one floors; not a general collection evening.

These are access windows, not a promise that you can arrive at closing time. Leave room for admission and the visit itself.

Prado: Choose a Small Target

The city's official tourism page lists free admission from 18:00 to 20:00 Monday to Saturday, and 17:00 to 19:00 on Sundays and holidays.

For a resident, the useful move is to decide what you want to see before you leave. Trying to cover the whole museum in the evening turns a good free visit into a speed test.

Use the Prado's official visitor page and its ticket channel to check the conditions for your date, particularly if a specific exhibition is your reason for going. Do not assume a free-entry timetable guarantees access to every exhibition.

Reina Sofía: Reserve the Free Ticket

The museum's regular free windows are 19:00–21:00 on Monday and Wednesday through Saturday, and 12:30–14:30 on Sunday. Tuesday is closed.

You still need a ticket during free hours, and the museum provides an online reservation link on its hours and prices page. These free windows are for individual visitors.

Last admission is 30 minutes before closing. Some temporary exhibitions can require a dated, timed ticket, so check the page for the particular show.

The museum itself identifies the start of free admission at 19:00 as a busy period and suggests 14:00–18:00 for a quieter visit. That is the trade-off: saving the admission cost may mean accepting a busier room.

Thyssen: Monday and Saturday Are Different Plans

Monday's free window is 12:00–16:00 for the collection. Saturday's is 21:00–23:00 for temporary exhibitions on the ground and minus-one floors. Choose Monday if the collection is your aim.

The museum says no ticket is required during these free periods. Still check the detailed exhibition timetable: individual exhibitions can have their own hours, and a Saturday listing is not permission to assume every gallery stays open until 23:00.

Monday is a useful option if you have a flexible lunch break or a day off. Saturday is a late cultural plan. They solve different problems.

Sorolla: The House and the Extension Are Not the Same Visit

The current Spanish visitor page says the extension opens from 15 October, with free admission limited to that new building. It continues to identify the house museum as temporarily closed for rehabilitation.

The extension address is Calle Zurbano, 68; the house is at General Martínez Campos, 37. Older closure notices remain online, so use the current hours page, not an old search result.

Go if you want to see what is currently available in the extension. Wait if your main reason is the original house interior.

A Realistic Plan for a Normal Week

Options for a normal week:

  • Flexible Monday: Thyssen during its midday collection window.
  • After work: Prado or Reina Sofía on a day whose free hours suit you.
  • Late Saturday: Thyssen, after checking that the exhibition you want is included.

For getting across town, use our Madrid public transport guide. If you are fitting cultural spending into a wider monthly budget, start with the cost-of-living guide.

Before You Leave Home

Open the official visitor page, check the date and any closure notice, and confirm the ticket arrangements. If you are using an age, student or other concession instead of a free-hour window, check its proof requirements separately.

Main tradeoffs

  • A free window saves money but limits flexibility; a paid visit can buy you more time.
