Key takeaways
- BiciMAD’s €10 flat rate lasts 30 days and includes unlimited rides of up to 30 minutes.
- Shared electric mopeds are a separate service: licence approval, service boundaries and parking rules matter.
- Check both your destination dock and your route before taking a BiciMAD bike.
Choose the vehicle for the trip
For a short ride from Chamberí to Chueca or Lavapiés to Atocha, BiciMAD can save a walk to the metro and a wait on the platform. Its electric assist helps with hills; you still pedal, and you finish at a station.
Madrid also has shared electric mopeds and motorbikes. Those seated vehicles are a different option from stand-up hire scooters. For a longer journey, the useful comparison is whether you have an accepted licence, can park near the destination and are comfortable riding in traffic.
BiciMAD: short rides between stations
EMT runs the public bike system across Madrid’s 21 districts. The March 2026 expansion announcement described a planned increase; it was not confirmation that every proposed station was already operating in May. Use the app’s live map for your start and destination.
The basic tariff has no monthly fee: €0.50 for the first 30 minutes, another €0.50 for the next 30, then €3 per additional half hour. The €10 flat rate lasts 30 days and includes unlimited trips of up to 30 minutes; longer rides incur the same extra blocks.
That makes trip length important. A full destination station can turn a short ride into a paid extension while you look for somewhere to return the bike. Check docks before leaving and confirm in the app that the return has ended the trip.
To start, download BiciMAD, create an MPass account, add payment details and choose a tariff. Follow the app’s unlocking and return instructions.
Pick a route you want to ride
Madrid Río is a useful place to become familiar with a BiciMAD bike on permitted cycling routes. Cross-barrio errands can also work well: Retiro to Goya, Malasaña to Chueca or Legazpi toward the river. Busy junctions and unprotected streets deserve more planning than the distance on a map suggests.
BiciMAD requires helmets for users under 18 and recommends them for everyone. It does not supply them. Ride in permitted cycling spaces and on the road, never on pavements. Mopeds follow their own road, helmet and parking requirements; a cycling route is not automatically a motorbike route.
On hot days, choose a shorter route and a cooler time, carry water and consult AEMET alerts.
BiciMAD is a good starting point when both ends have docks and the journey fits its short-trip pricing. Consider a shared moped when the licence, road route and permitted parking work better for the journey.
Main tradeoffs
- BiciMAD trips end at a station; moped rentals must end within the operator’s permitted parking area.
